Inspired by one pirate's struggles, episode 80 is all about SLEEP! Sleep is an important part of good health, but also something many of us struggle with. According to the Sleep Foundation, adults (ages 18-64) need seven to nine hours of sleep every night. Over 1/3 of American adults get less than seven hours per night.
Stages of sleep:
- Awake - a natural break in sleep
- Light - guides you into deeper stages of sleep
- Deep - focuses on restoring your body
- REM - Re-energizes your mind
The REM stage is key - It helps to restore the functioning of our brains including how we store memories, learn new skills, regulate mood, and more. It's also when we DREAM!
Commons dream themes:
- Being chased or pursued
- Falling
- Arriving too late
- School, teachers, studying
- Living person being dead, or dead person being alive
- Failing an examination
- Dreams about losing our teeth
- Losing control of the vehicle
- Snakes
- Finding money
- Seeing a face very close to you
- Seeing yourself in the mirror
Struggling with sleep? Here are a few tips from the CDC:
- Go to bed at the same time each night.
- Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, and relaxing.
- Keep TVs, computers, and smart phones OUT of the room.
- Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol right before bed.
- Get exercise during the day.
