Always Be Kind!

Denise gave the Pirates a mission... to complete at least three random acts of kindness!

Here's what we did...
  • Picked up the tab for friends at the Laughing Fox Tavern.
  • Delivered meat (from Honey Baked Ham) to family after surgery.
  • Reconnected and encouraged former co-workers.
  • Took the team to Dunkin (and stole a Munchkin).
  • Colored bookmarks and postcards for Read Across America
  • Helped to unload a (very heavy) delivery of construction materials.
  • Checked in with three friends and made plans to meetup.
  • Took a student to Costco for his favorite pizza.
  • Sent thank you flowers to helpful staff at the bank.
Let's keep this kindess train going! What random acts of kindness can you do this week? Let us know in the comments!

Review of "Never Finished"

"I'm not crazy. I'm just not you." David Goggins

David Goggins has been a fan favorite of the Pirates since Shawna first heard him on the Ed Mylett Show! He is a retired Navy SEAL, endurance athlete, and Guinness World Record holder. Not to mention he is SAVAGE.

In Episode 92, The Pirates review his second book "Never Finished."

Here are a few of our top takeaways:
  • POTENTIAL - how much we have and how little we use! Goggins truly challenges himself to not just level up, but to take himself to the very limits of his capabilities.

  • ONE SECOND DECISIONS - It takes just one second to let fear (or pain) stop us from reaching our goals. Using a strategy utilized by the Navy SEALS, Goggins uses mindset to push through some of his toughest challenges.

  • FOX HOLES - Who is in your "fox hole" (or on your team)? Do they help you to level up or do they pull you down? Goggins makes sure he's around the people that propel him forward.
Although his methods could be considered extreme, it's impossible to deny the level of success he has achieved - and the motivation he brings to many (including the Pirates)!  You may not see us at the starting line-up of an ultramarathon (yet), but Goggins has certainly inspired us to embrace the "never finished" mindset and continue to take on new challenges!

Bonus tip: Get this book on Audible! Goggins narrates and included bonus content between chapters!

Four Years!

On April Fool's Day 2019,  we stepped into the Knightly News Podcast Studio for the very first to record Episode 1 of The Pirate Life Podcast! Now in Episode 91, we reflect on what we've learned over the past four years and what we see for the future of the podcast!

Re-listening to that first episode brought the following to light:

  • We've gotten better (thankfully) and a lot less nervous!
  • A lot has changed for us personally.  We may be juggling new schedules and commitments, but one thing remains the same... our commitment to the show and each other (also Denise's frequent vacations)!
  • Oh, and the intro... can you hear the difference between episode 1 and episode 91?

We've learned a lot along the way:

  • Michael taught us about the magic of Libsyn helping us to get our podcast across various platforms easily.
  • Shawna has become an Audacity expert - editing our raw audio each month, adding sound effects (and making Denise and Adrienne sound GREAT along the way)!
  • We are podcasters!! It took a while for us to identify as such, but we got there (and we are so thankful)!

Our favorite things about podcasting have remained the same:

  • Spending time with each other.
  • Hearing from our listeners.
  • Having the opportunity to create something together!

What we dream of for the future:

  • Dunkin as a sponsor!
  • Continuing to grow as individuals and as a team.
  • Inspiring others to lean into their own adventures and LIVE THE PIRATE LIFE!
Thank you for being with us for the past four years!

Personalities

After some personality-based assignments in her doctoral program at WILMU, Adrienne shared her homework with her mateys! In episode 89, the pirates tried and compared the results of three different personality assessments!

According to Tony Robbins, personality tests can, "help individuals better understand their strengths and weaknesses so that they can become the best version of themselves." You know that's something the pirates can get behind!

Here's what they took:
  • 16 Personalities - According to their site, this free assessment can help you to understand others, understand your teams, and strengthen your relationships. Although the coded results may look similar to the Myers-Briggs assessment, the science behind 16 Personalities is slightly different. 16 Personalities is based on five personality aspects: mind, energy, nature, tactics, and identity.

So how did the pirates rate? All three were deemed to be CONSULS (ESFJ):

A Consul (ESFJ) is a person with the Extraverted, Observant, Feeling, and Judging personality traits. They are attentive and people-focused, and they enjoy taking part in their social community. Their achievements are guided by decisive values, and they willingly offer guidance to others... Consuls have a talent for making the people in their lives feel supported, cared for, and secure.

The fifth dimesion was the only area where we differed. Shawna was Assertive (ESFJ-A meaning she is self-assured, even-tempered and resistent to stress). Denise and Adrienne were Turbulent (ESFJ-T meaning they are self-conscious and sensitive to stress).

How do you think we matched up?

  • Color Code  - The Color Code digs into primary motivations - helping you to understand WHY you do what you do. The assessment boils down to four different colors:

Can you guess where the pirates landed? We were all BLUE!  You can take this assessment for free to learn your primary color. You'll also have the option to pay for your full results to get a color-coded pie chart showing exactly how much you fall into each color.

  • Which Winnie the Pooh Character are You? - Ok, this one was just for fun, and was the only assessment where we strongly differed! Can you guess what characters we were? Denise was Christopher Robin, Adrienne was Kanga, and Shawna was Eyeore (oh bother!).

What's your pirate personality? Listen to episode 89 and let us know in the comments!
